BACKSTORY

Challenge

How do you tell a story on sustainability with data?

In 2021, we partnered with Mercer international, a leading provider of renewable bio-based forest products. Our mission was to work with Mercer’s communications teams in Canada and Germany to build a unique, accurate, and engaging sustainability report — a first for the company. As a diverse team operating across 3 continents and 10 facilities, Mercer’s leadership needed a report that stood out from typical data-heavy corporate publications, while deepening trust with stakeholders and showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Solution

Brand book meets annual report

When acquiring stakeholder buy-in, data is everything. With the help of a detailed materiality assessment process, Mercer found a way to engage stakeholders to determine how important specific environmental, economic, and social issues are to them. These insights helped us design a unique report that conveyed the Mercer Way – who the company is at its core. Alongside the numbers, we were able to interview stakeholders inside the company and in the communities where they work to tell the stories behind the figures. Along the way, we also saw an opportunity to cement Mercer’s brand story – one of sustainability across everything they do, from manufacturing to hiring to community engagement and beyond.

Result

From digital to print

The sustainability report is available via Mercer’s website and social media channels, but also as a physical book, available in both English and German. Read Mercer’s 2021 Sustainability Report here.

One more cool thing...

Printing the Climate Smart way

We printed this report with Mitchell Press, a local Climate Smart certified printer that is dedicated to minimizing environmental impact at every stage in the production and printing process. Initiatives such as recycling 100% of their manufacturing waste, including downcycling leftover ink for use in newspapers and converting their own emissions into clean, usable fuel have allowed them to achieve the highest possible Blueline Ranking, which assesses North American printers according to conservation and sustainability criteria.
